Legion Of Monsters!
When I picked up Bloodstone and The Legion of Monsters off the half-price rack at my local comic book shop, I did it to get the vintage stories of Ulysses Bloodstone, the immortal caveman who has waged war on all sorts of monsters, mostly of the giant variety for thousands of years.
I didn't give two hoots about the more modern quartet of stories of a modern "Legion of Monsters" led by Michael Morbius and Elsa Bloodstone and including Jack Russell the Werewolf, the Living Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon knock-off who's name I forget. (Echoes of both Buffy and Hellboy are resonant.)
This was some attempt to take properties and season them sharply with satire and thrust out the product to the public. It's written by a guy maybe named "Hopeless" and drawn by some cat perhaps named "Doe" in a raucous style which alas often leaves me cold. But against all likelihood when I finally sat down to read these stories I found them entertaining.
I prefer the more blood and guts approach of the 70's but the self-aware ironic tone of the more modern era can work in small doses.
I would never have bought these four comics on their own and I don't recommend anyone else do that, but if you've a hankering for the vintage stuff, the other stories are worth a few minutes as well.
