Price Guides In Space!

Wally Wood had it, whatever it was. His sleek shapes and smooth but textured images communicated modernity and nostalgia all at the same time. Here we have a scene straight from the pulpiest of sci-fi pulps as a cadre of doughty spacemen and attractive spacewoman brave an alien landscape filled with toadstools and B.E.M.s of the most slithery kind, a giant skeleton looking on as if to say all is lost. It's a tumble of cliches but still when Wood and the boys in his studio put them all together they snap together like so many legos.

This particular image was crafted for the ninth Overstreet Price Guide. The Overstree guides are pretty much over nowadays, at least for a collector with my weakened eyesight. But once upon a time when info on comic lore was difficult to discover, getting the annual price check on the industry was fun in itself. I missed this one and am happy to have discovered it just a few weeks ago. The cover is sweet and the articles on EC are pretty entertaining even today. And looking at those prices will make you weep.
