When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth. was produced hot on the heels of the successful One Million B.C. which introduced the world to Raquel Welch in her delightful fur bikini, this one gives us Victoria Vetri in an even more revealing sliver of clothing. The overarching plot of the movie (and there is a mild spoiler here) is that in some mythical moment in the deep past when man and dinosaurs somehow held sway together on the planet it did not yet have its Moon, but it would get one. That's pretty much the plot if you ignore all the scrimmaging around various and sundry actors do as they rush around trying to finish off Vetri's character named "Sanna".



She was to be a sacrifice to the Sun, but she escaped and the rest of the movie is about how the Cliff People try to find and kill her though she has come under the protection of the Beach People. Sanna escapes again and finds herself reborn (sort of) and in command of a pretty neat dinosaur in a King Kong-ish moment. Her lover Tara finds her a few times and eventually after many very long minutes of scampering about they get together as Earth gets its Moon, in rather violent fashion.


The movie is handsomely done and offers up some pretty cave dwellers (who almost never go into caves) but spend time mostly on the beach. There are a few different dinosaurs, some stop-motion and some not who really don't seem to be much of a threat to people unless the people insist on walking right in on top of them. The stop-motion work is by Jim Danforth who worked with Harryhausen and was nominated for an Oscar for a second time, for his special effects work on this flick.


This movie seems mostly to be about Vetri and other pretty actresses strutting about in nearly the all-together, and to be fair there's quite a bit of skin for man fans too. The movie hasn't enough plot twists of sufficient variety though to keep me on my toes throughout. Slash out about twenty minutes, maybe a few more and you might have a movie which earns its prehistoric keep.

    There was also a nude scene where Sanna and her boyfriend go into a cave and swim naked in a pool but this scene was removed when the film was shown on TV. I've watched the film on YouTube too but the nude scene is still missing.

      On the Warner Archives DVD I have the glorious nudity is still included. Vetri looks quite fetching with no clothes on, but in this movie that's a tiny difference between that and all the rest of the time. There's also a brief scene of a minor character who gets her top ripped off just to be conclusive on this issue. The nudity is not necessary for the movie but it's appreciated.

Wally Wood was one of the great artists in the history of the comic book form, and one of the most troubled. He was a mercurial figure, starting out on the sci-fi and horror comics of his day in the 50's and elevating to the best of them at EC Comics before broadening out to humor and superheroes and more. He was always it seemed a maverick of sorts, spending a few months at Marvel revising Daredevil, stopping at Tower to develop the THUNDER Agents, beginning Doctor Doom's series, visiting DC to spruce up the Justice Society of America, and all the while working at the edges of the establishment in the Undergrounds with work that the Big Two would never publish, most of it with a distinctive slant on explicit sex. Much of Wally Wood's notorious sexy stuff was collected some years ago in a French collection titled "Con de Fee" and that title was lifted by Fantagraphics for their relatively modern collection of Wood's "dirty comics".

Weird Sex-Fantasy!

One aspect of Wally Wood's career which I've not really spent too much time on is his bent for pornography. Back when comics were squeaky clean vehicles meant only to entertain the teeming and impressionable youth of America and little beyond it was perhaps sensible by and large to keep things like raw unbridled sex at arms length. But that didn't mean that artists didn't dabble in that greatest of all human endeavors, and one of the first I ever knew about who drew stuff like this was Wally Wood. You'd find him on the latest issue of DC's Justice Society of America rendering a sexy new character like Power Girl, rendered strikingly but still within the confines of the weakening but not yet extinct Comics Code Authority. At the same time you could look higher in the racks where the little kids couldn't reach or perhaps behind the counter and find more raucous and frank presentations of sex from a master like Wood.
